Athletes and outdoor enthusiasts will have a chance to explore the breathtaking scenery of the Sapphire Coast at the inaugural Galleria Mall Challenge, organized by the Amanzimtoti Athletics Club and backed by Sapphire Coast Tourism. Set to take place in Amanzimtoti on Sunday, April 7th, this event offers participants an opportunity to experience the region’s stunning beaches and tourist attractions, culminating in an exciting sporting spectacle.

Participants can choose from various race distances, including a 5km fun run, as well as 10km and 21.1km races, all starting and ending at Galleria Mall. Every participant completing their chosen distance will receive a medal as a token of achievement.

Kurt Hoggan, General Manager of Galleria Mall, expressed the mall’s commitment to community support and healthy living through the launch of the Galleria Mall Challenge. The event promises not only exhilarating running and walking competitions but also entertainment provided by East Coast Radio, enticing spot prizes, goodie bags, and medals for all participants. Hoggan encourages everyone to join in the festivities and support the participants for a memorable day out.

Lynette Botha, representing the Amanzimtoti Athletics Club, emphasized the significance of this new race for the club and expressed gratitude to Galleria Mall for hosting the event. The club aims to establish this as an annual event, with plans to incorporate the 21.1km route as part of the KZN Half-Marathon Championship, offering prize money to the victor.

Romy Wenzel, from Sapphire Coast Tourism, highlighted the event as an excellent opportunity for visitors to extend their stay in the region, which boasts attractions stretching from Athlone Park in the North to Clansthal in the South. With the race aligning with the Easter holidays and favorable weather conditions, Wenzel encourages visitors to enjoy a weekend on the Sapphire Coast and explore its diverse offerings.

Notable attractions along the Sapphire Coast include Amanzimtoti Main Beach, Splash Water World with its thrilling slides, and a variety of dining options along the promenade. Water sports enthusiasts can indulge in paddling, surfing, bodyboarding, and kitesurfing. Inland adventures include exploring Nungwane Waterfall, Mnini Dam, and the historic town of Adams Mission, with unique experiences offered at Maqaqa Exclusive Lifestyle. For underwater enthusiasts, the world-class Aliwal Shoal dive site beckons with opportunities for scuba diving, snorkeling, and deep-sea fishing, while horse rides, birdwatching, and nature reserve walks provide additional recreational options. Golfers can tee off at Umkomaas Golf Club or Amanzimtoti Country Club and Conservancy, while families can enjoy a day out at Crocworld Conservation Centre, known for its educational and entertaining exhibits.
