Why foot health is the overlooked luxury wellness essential
A foundation for total-body wellness
Every May, World Foot Health Awareness Month shines a spotlight on one of the body’s most overlooked wellness essentials: our feet.
Despite carrying us through daily life, foot health is often ignored until discomfort appears. Yet these complex structures contain 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments – all working together to support posture, movement and balance.
In South Africa, where long hours of standing, walking and physically demanding work are part of daily life, prioritising foot health is no longer optional.
Why your feet affect your entire body
“Your body works as one unit,” says physiotherapist Liani Potgieter, owner of Grimes Physiotherapy. “If one area is compromised, the body compensates. Even a small issue like a cracked heel, callus or minor ankle strain can subtly change how you walk, creating tension elsewhere — often in the knees, hips or lower back.”
This happens through fascia, the connective tissue linking muscles, bones and organs. When strain appears in one area, the effects travel through the entire body.
South Africa’s growing foot health conversation
For Lynsey Hammond, owner of Kroko Footcare, this awareness month is long overdue. “Foot health is foundational to human movement, yet many people only pay attention when pain sets in.”
She notes that South Africans face unique lifestyle demands, making preventative foot care critical for mobility, posture and long-term wellbeing.
Subtle warning signs to watch for
Small foot concerns can trigger bigger physical issues. Key indicators include:
- Cracked heels affecting the way you walk
- Uneven shoe wear
- Tightness in the hips or lower back
- Leg fatigue after short periods of standing
- Persistent calluses, corns or pressure points
Simple habits for healthier feet
1. Moisturise daily: Prevents cracks, friction and skin breakdown.
2. Treat calluses early: Ignoring hardened skin can alter gait and posture.
3. Invest in supportive footwear: Well-fitted shoes – and socks – matter.
4. Don’t ignore discomfort: Pain is often a late warning sign.
5. Stretch regularly: Gentle foot, calf and hamstring stretches improve alignment and mobility.
The luxury of preventative care
True wellness begins from the ground up. As awareness grows, foot health awareness in South Africa is becoming an essential part of active living – not simply cosmetic maintenance, but a powerful investment in lifelong movement, comfort and vitality.
