A Dermapen is a small device that resembles a pen and is generally used for microneedling on people with skin issues and the end product is a tightened, rejuvenated and glowing skin...

The Dermapen 4 is a revolutionary micro-needling device which aims to tighten, lift and rejuvenate skin without significant downtime. The treatment is more effective in piercing the skin than traditional skin needling rollers.

The treatment can be as effective as Fractional laser, chemical peels, IPL and other skin rejuvenation techniques without the significant downtime, making Dermapen a popular treatment.

The principle idea behind Dermapen needling is that micro injuries to the skin promote collagen and elastin growth as a by-product to healing. Essentially, as your body heals the skin increases the production of collagen and elastin and this production leads to fresher, rejuvenated skin.

Dermapen is used mostly for face wrinkles, scars, stretch marks and facial lines. When one is injured and the skin forms a scar, or if they have a stretch mark the body will treat these as though that area was repaired. Therefore having the punctures created in the scar tissue will cause the skin to initiate healing and, therefore, the damaged skin will tend to get eliminated and replaced with new skin. For wrinkles and face lines, basically, the produced collagen and elastin will cause the skin to thicken and also tighten leaving the skin looking youthful.

On our quest for the perfect, glowing skin, Joburg Style chatted to Dr. Alastair Clark from Sandton Aesthetic Institute to get the low down on this increasingly popular treatment.

JS: What are the benefits of a Dermapen 4 treatment?

Dr. Clark: Skin tightening, stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, minimize enlarged pores.

JS: What areas of concern can one treat with the Dermapen 4?

Dr. Clark: Stretchmarks, acne scarring, surgical scars, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, pigmentation, over all skin rejuvenation.

JS: How long is one treatment session?

Dr. Clark: 30-60 minutes

JS: How long before we start seeing results?

Dr. Clark: Results can be seen after a single session, however we recommend 4-6 treatments 3-4 weeks apart for optimal results.

JS: What will a treatment cost? Any other benefits from this treatment?

Dr. Clark: R1710 per treatment- R2010. Dermapen treatments can be done in combination with many other aesthetic skin treatments. Another major benefit is that there is a minimal downtime.

Our verdict? It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to improve your skin’s elasticity, collagen, pore size, acne scars, stretch marks or any other factor… the Dermapen 4 does it faster and with more power and precision – it means less pain, and the results are immediate. There is no surgical intervention which we love. The result is a natural, glowing skin. Just be careful of imitation treatments – there are a number of cheaper copies on the market that don’t offer the latest technology and won’t give you unparalleled results.  For a full list of approved clinics visit: www.genop.co.za.

Hi Jan, Please email Dr Alastair Clark on drclark@sandtonaesthetics.co.za and he can answer all your questions. I have had the Dermapen and it is really not that painful. You will be a little red for a day, but back to normal after that. The results are amazing. Just be careful who you go to – must be a qualified person. We highly recommend Dr. Clark. Thanks. Gina

I have never had the Dr Pen – only Dermapen, so I am not sure what the comparison would be.
