Heineken’s innovative Bar de Change activation is back ahead of football’s biggest global travel season, allowing travellers to enjoy local beer prices in the United States and Mexico
As thousands of football fans prepare to travel across North America this June, Heineken® is once again helping South Africans enjoy more social moments without the sting of unfavourable exchange rates.
Following a successful debut earlier this year, the popular Heineken Bar de Change returns from 4 to 8 June 2026, offering travellers the opportunity to pre-purchase Heineken beers at South African prices before departure and redeem them at participating venues across the United States and Mexico.
The initiative will be available at OR Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and Nigeria’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
What Is the Heineken Bar de Change?
Inspired by the concept of a traditional Bureau de Change, Heineken’s Bar de Change allows travellers to lock in local beer prices before they leave home.
For many South Africans, international travel often comes with unexpected costs. A beer that feels affordable locally can quickly become significantly more expensive when converted into US dollars or Mexican pesos.
Heineken’s solution removes the hassle of constantly calculating exchange rates and gives travellers the chance to enjoy social experiences abroad without worrying about the cost of every round.
The concept first launched during the Easter travel period and received strong consumer support, prompting the brand to expand the activation ahead of what is expected to be one of the busiest international football travel seasons in years.
Making Travel More Social
At its core, the Bar de Change is about more than beer.
It’s about preserving the spontaneous moments that make travel memorable. The post-match celebrations. The unexpected conversations. The extra round with friends that turns into an unforgettable evening.
According to Heineken, exchange rates shouldn’t determine how social a trip becomes.
“This is set to be one of the biggest international travel periods football fans have seen in years, but it’s also likely to be one of the most expensive,” says Alex Drake. “For South Africans and Nigerians, exchange rates can influence everything from the bars you choose to visit to whether you stay for one more round with friends. Bar de Change was created to remove that barrier and create more memorable social moments.”
Where Travellers Can Access Bar de Change
The activation will be available from 4 to 8 June 2026 at:
- OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg
- Cape Town International Airport
- Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos
Pre-purchased Heineken beers can be redeemed at participating Heineken partner venues across selected destinations in the United States and Mexico.
United States: Travellers visiting Atlanta, Georgia can redeem their purchases at venues including STATS Brewpub, Westside Motor Lounge, F1 Arcade, Hard Rock Café and Signia Hotel.
Mexico: Participating venues span both Mexico City and Monterrey.
Sharing the Experience
Travellers using the Bar de Change are encouraged to share their experiences on social media by tagging Heineken and showcasing their journeys, celebrations and social moments abroad.
Whether it’s the first beer after landing or a post-match toast with friends, Heineken wants fans to show how the Bar de Change helped keep the good times flowing.
