How premium bitters are transforming cocktail culture and elevating every sip

Cocktail culture is evolving. Today’s drink enthusiasts are no longer choosing cocktails based solely on whether they’re sweet or savoury. Instead, they’re exploring flavour, craftsmanship and the ingredients that create a perfectly balanced drink.

As consumers embrace premium drinking experiences, bitters have become one of the most important ingredients behind the bar. Once considered simply a finishing touch, bitters are now recognised for adding depth, balance and complexity to classic and contemporary cocktails alike.

Premium Rum Meets a New Era of Cocktails

Premium rum is enjoying a resurgence as bartenders and home mixologists rediscover its versatility. While rum has long been associated with tropical favourites, it is increasingly taking centre stage in sophisticated serves that highlight its rich character.

From timeless classics to modern creations, today’s cocktails focus on flavour harmony rather than sweetness alone.

According to an ANGOSTURA® ambassador, the biggest change isn’t necessarily what people are drinking — it’s how they’re experiencing flavour.

“Cocktail enthusiasts are becoming more adventurous and intentional. They’re discovering that small changes can completely transform a cocktail, and bitters are often the ingredient making that difference.”

Why Bitters Matter in Every Cocktail

Bitters are often described as the seasoning of the cocktail world. Just a few dashes can completely change the profile of a drink by bringing every ingredient into balance.

Different bitters create different flavour experiences:

  • Aromatic bitters add warmth, spice and complexity.
  • Orange bitters brighten citrus and fruit flavours.
  • Cocoa bitters introduce richness that pairs beautifully with aged rum.

The result is a more refined cocktail that reveals new layers of flavour with every sip.

The Rise of Craft Cocktail Culture

Consumers are increasingly seeking quality over quantity. Rather than following the latest drinks trend, many are looking for memorable experiences, premium ingredients and cocktails that showcase craftsmanship.

That shift has fuelled renewed interest in bitters, both in cocktail bars and at home.

As one of the world’s best-known bitters producers, ANGOSTURA® has seen growing demand not only for its iconic Aromatic Bitters but also its Orange Bitters and Cocoa Bitters, giving cocktail lovers more ways to personalise their favourite drinks.

The Perfect Pairing: Rum and Bitters

The relationship between rum and bitters has never been stronger. Bitters enhance the natural character of premium rum, adding balance without overpowering its flavour.

Whether you’re enjoying a classic Rum Old Fashioned or experimenting with your own creations, the right bitters can transform a familiar cocktail into something altogether more sophisticated.

As premium rum continues to gain popularity, the real conversation is shifting beyond the spirit itself to the ingredients that unlock its full potential.

Sometimes, all it takes is a few carefully chosen dashes of bitters.

Rum Old Fashioned Recipe

One of the best ways to experience the harmony between premium rum and bitters is with a classic Rum Old Fashioned.

Ingredients

  • 60ml premium aged rum
  • 7.5ml demerara sugar syrup (or 5ml simple syrup)
  • 2 dashes ANGOSTURA® Aromatic Bitters
  • 2 dashes ANGOSTURA® Orange Bitters
  • Orange peel
  • Large ice cube

Method

Fill a mixing glass with ice and add the rum, syrup and bitters. Stir for around 20 to 30 seconds until well chilled. Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass. Express the oils from a strip of orange peel over the drink, rub it around the rim of the glass, then garnish and serve.
