Beyond the glamour, The Pink Society is building a community around cancer support, confidence and meaningful action – with the Carmen Cares Foundation at its heart
There is power in bringing people together, but The Pink Society wants that connection to extend far beyond a single afternoon.
Created as a purpose-led platform where fashion, creativity, business and philanthropy intersect, The Pink Society is setting out to turn premium experiences into opportunities for meaningful community impact.
Its inaugural fundraiser, held at Country Club Johannesburg in September, offered a glimpse of that vision. Under the theme “Where Prestige Meets Purpose,” the initiative brought designers, speakers, entertainers, businesses and supporters together in aid of the Carmen Cares Foundation and in partnership with the Rotary E-Club of Southern Africa D9400.
But the greater story is what comes next.
Putting Purpose Behind the Prestige
At the centre of The Pink Society is the belief that glamour and social impact do not need to exist in separate worlds.
“The Pink Society was created to show that glamour and purpose can share the same stage,” says founder Carmen Melissa. “Every person who attended, sponsored, performed, designed or volunteered helped us turn a beautiful occasion into something truly meaningful. This was not simply an event – it was a community coming together to make a difference.”
That philosophy is intended to shape The Pink Society as it grows, connecting influential individuals, businesses and South African creative talent with charitable initiatives that need both practical support and greater visibility.
For the Carmen Cares Foundation, that visibility is particularly important.
Inspired by Carmen Melissa’s own journey through cancer and significant health challenges, the foundation focuses on cancer wellness, emotional support and helping people maintain a sense of dignity and confidence during treatment.
Its Carmen Care Packages include thoughtful beauty and wellness essentials such as wigs and lashes, recognising that cancer care extends beyond clinical treatment.
“The support shown at The Pink Society was incredibly moving,” says Melissa. “It will enable the Carmen Cares Foundation to reach more people affected by cancer and remind them that, even during the most difficult times, they still deserve to feel beautiful and confident.”
Why Confidence Is Part of Cancer Care
The Carmen Cares Foundation approaches wellness from a deeply human perspective.
Cancer can change the way a person feels physically and emotionally. Hair loss and other visible effects of treatment can affect identity and confidence at a time when patients are already navigating considerable uncertainty.
Through its care packages, wellness initiatives and community connections, the foundation aims to help people reconnect with themselves.
This is also where The Pink Society’s relationship with fashion and beauty becomes more significant. Rather than treating glamour as something superficial, the platform positions creativity, self-expression and confidence as tools that can contribute to emotional wellbeing and connection.
The result is a different approach to fundraising – one designed to make giving feel engaging, collaborative and deeply personal.
Fashion With Something to Say
South African fashion is expected to remain an important part of The Pink Society’s identity.
Its first gathering demonstrated that potential through a charity runway featuring Diaan Daniels Couture, JJ Schoeman, Chantal Couture, JT Bespoke Couture and Sari for Change.
The designers brought South African creativity to the runway while helping illustrate how the fashion industry can lend its reach, talent and cultural influence to causes beyond clothing.
Models from Rampage Modelling Agency took part in the showcase, with beauty teams including renowned make-up artist and organiser Jose de Sousa and artists from Blush Academy contributing their skills.
It created a collaborative model that The Pink Society hopes to continue developing – bringing different corners of the creative economy together around a shared purpose.
Starting Bigger Conversations
The platform is also designed to create space for conversations around health, ageing, wellness and living fully.
Its first speaker programme reflected that broader outlook. Television presenter and Middeljare-mojo personality Marna Grobler explored embracing life after 50, while Dr Arnav Kapur shared insights into early cancer detection research.
Professional speaker, coach and master facilitator Candida Di Giandomenico joined the conversation, while Tandi Potgieter spoke about saying “yes” to life and introduced guests to the values and work of Rotary.
Mrs World 2025 Tshego Gaelae guided the programme as Master of Ceremonies, while representatives from Rotary International included District Governor Nominee Jean Bernardo and Rotary E-Club of Southern Africa D9400 President David Price.
These conversations point towards a broader ambition for The Pink Society: not simply raising funds, but creating a network through which awareness, expertise, creativity and resources can be shared.
Building a Community Beyond One Event
The Pink Society’s next chapter will be defined by whether that momentum can be transformed into sustained impact.
Rather than existing as a once-off fundraiser, the vision is to grow the initiative into a platform capable of connecting people and organisations with causes that deserve attention.
“This was the first of what we hope will become many opportunities to bring people together through prestige, purpose and genuine community impact,” says Joan Sainsbury from the Rotary E-Club of Southern Africa D9400.
That distinction matters.
Purpose-led events are most valuable when the conversation continues after the tables have been cleared and the final look has left the runway. For The Pink Society, the opportunity now lies in building on its first gathering to create lasting partnerships, broaden awareness around cancer support and extend the reach of the Carmen Cares Foundation.
The inaugural event demonstrated what can happen when designers, businesses, medical voices, community organisations, entertainers and individuals rally around a shared cause.
Now, The Pink Society wants to turn that collective energy into something enduring.
Because “Where Prestige Meets Purpose” is intended to be more than an event theme. It is the foundation of what comes next.
