From television favourite to podcast success story, The Dan Nicholl Show proves authentic conversations never go out of style

For more than a decade, The Dan Nicholl Show has been one of South Africa’s most loved long-form entertainment platforms. Now, the show is celebrating another major milestone with the release of its 100th podcast episode – cementing its successful evolution from television staple to digital storytelling powerhouse.

Originally launched in 2015 on SuperSport, The Dan Nicholl Show became a familiar and much-loved presence on South African screens over the course of eight years, 16 seasons, and 219 episodes. Known for its witty, warm, and often unpredictable interviews, the show built a loyal following thanks to Dan Nicholl’s effortless ability to connect with guests from across sport, entertainment, food, culture, and beyond.

When the television version wrapped in 2022, fans wondered whether the magic could translate into a podcast format. The answer, it seems, has been a resounding yes.

When we signed off on The Dan Nicholl Show on DStv in 2023, my production team surprised me with a montage of highlights that brought me to tears,” says Nicholl. “Conversations with the late Shane Warne, boxing lessons with Evander Holyfield, musical nostalgia with Bon Jovi’s Tico Torres, broadcasting from the Rugby World Cup in Tokyo – the adventures and experiences were often surreal, and always unforgettable.”

Reinventing a South African Favourite

In 2024, Nicholl revived the show as a podcast, opening the door to longer, more intimate conversations and a deeper level of storytelling.

“Bringing the show back as a podcast was a decision taken with a little caution: could the new format begin to match the highs of the television run? Simple answer: yes,” Nicholl explains. “While the energy of lights, cameras and a studio audience is very different, the podcast has afforded longer, deeper, more intimate conversations with people who have truly compelling stories.”

The first 100 podcast episodes have featured an impressive mix of personalities and candid conversations:

– veteran broadcaster Ryan O’Connor spoke openly about grief and loss;

– former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan reflected on fatherhood as his son Archie begins carving out his own cricket career;

Jo-Ann Strauss discussed rediscovering art and creativity;

Oscar Chalupsky shared a deeply moving perspective on his cancer journey;

Kevin Pietersen unpacked his passion for conservation and protecting South Africa’s rhinos;

– actress and presenter Jeannie Dee opened up about love, marriage, and family life; and

– international football star Thiago Alcântara reflected on adapting to life in England.

The podcast has also expanded beyond South African borders, with Nicholl travelling to Bangkok to interview some of the city’s leading chefs amid Thailand’s booming fine-dining scene.

“There are so many memories and moments from 100 episodes and 100 guests,” says Nicholl. “But it’s the compilation of all those stories, all those people, and all those conversations that makes for the real joy of the show’s reimagining as a podcast.”

Why The Dan Nicholl Show Still Resonates

At a time when audiences are increasingly drawn to meaningful, personality-driven content, The Dan Nicholl Showcontinues to stand out for its authenticity. The move from television to podcasting has allowed for richer conversations, giving listeners a more personal connection to guests and stories.

“There’s an electricity to recording a show with multiple guests on set as the cameras roll,” Nicholl adds, “but the podcast makes for a very happy space – and one that still has a long road ahead.”

As the show celebrates its 100th podcast episode, the milestone reflects more than longevity. It signals the continued appetite for thoughtful storytelling, humour, honesty, and human connection – qualities that have defined The Dan Nicholl Show from the very beginning.
