Homemade carts, outrageous costumes and spectacular crashes take over Sandton Drive on 4 October – and entry is free

The Red Bull Box Cart Race Johannesburg 2026 is back, and Sandton Drive is about to become the city’s wildest downhill stage.

On Sunday, 4 October 2026, gravity replaces horsepower as homemade carts, elaborate costumes and fearless teams race downhill in one of Johannesburg’s most entertaining free events. The first cart launches at 11am, and spectators won’t need a ticket.

The Red Bull Box Cart Race is far more than a race. It’s part street theatre, part engineering experiment and part spectacular wipeout.

Each team pushes its handmade, engine-free cart to the top of the ramp before performing a theatrical skit for the judges and crowd. Pirates, superheroes, giant potjie pots and runaway bathtubs have all made appearances in previous editions.

Once the performance ends, the cart is released.

Some machines glide effortlessly over the jumps. Others lose a wheel within seconds, spin into the hay bales or collapse in glorious slow motion. The biggest crowd favourites aren’t always the fastest.

Judges score teams on:

• Creativity

• Showmanship

That means a cart held together with imagination and duct tape can outshine the quickest run of the day.

Entry is free for spectators

One of the biggest draws of the Red Bull Box Cart Race Johannesburg 2026 is that anyone can watch for free.

Families, groups of friends and curious spectators can line Sandton Drive for a front-row view of the action. A hat, comfortable shoes and an early arrival are recommended if you’re planning to secure a prime viewing spot.

Behind every outrageous cart is a team that’s spent weeks building, testing and refining a wildly ambitious idea.

For Noma Yini, the event is about more than competition.

“We honestly signed up because it’s fun, but it’s also about creativity, representation and telling our story. As Black South Africans, we want to show that we belong in spaces like this, bringing the spirit of the kasi, the hustle and the ability to make something out of nothing. Spectators can expect plenty of energy, humour and excitement when we hit the track.”

First-time entrants Kwik Kwik Nauw Nauw, powered by Takealot, have their eyes firmly on victory.

“This is our first Red Bull Box Cart Race, and we’re excited to bring Kwik Kwik Nauw Nauw, powered by Takealot, to the track. We’re going for the win with speed, a standout design and a fun, delivery-inspired performance. Most importantly, we’re ready to entertain the crowd and bring the energy on race day.”

South Africa’s only Red Bull Box Cart Race on the continent

South Africa remains the only African country to host the Red Bull Box Cart Race.

Previous editions thundered through Cape Town’s steep Bo-Kaap streets, where crowds exceeded 22,000 spectators. The memorable Potjie Boytjies from Stellenbosch claimed the title with a potjie pot on wheels, proving that storytelling often beats perfection.

Now Johannesburg hosts the eighth South African edition, joining a 2026 international calendar that includes Belfast, London, Denver and Los Angeles.
