From the moment we stepped off the plane, we were greeted by the most fantastic people. Moshe, a wonderful man who seemed to be immune to the late hour of 1 am, welcomed us with a big smile at the airport. Now, I have to admit, being a typical Jozi girl, I was a bit skeptical at first. But as we embarked on a two-hour drive to the east of the island, I realized that this was the normal way of traveling in Zanzibar.
And when we finally arrived, it was like stepping into paradise. The crystal-clear waters, reminiscent of Seychelles, greeted us with a sense of tranquility we had never experienced in Joburg. And let me tell you, there were no kids around, which was a requirement for my peace-seeking soul. All we could hear was the soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore.
Now, Chad, being the seasoned Zanzibar explorer, had a mile-long to-do list for us. We had work to do, taking pictures and getting rates, but little did we know that these tasks would lead to unforgettable encounters. The team at @oohlala, led by the amazing Kassim and his staff, left us dumbfounded by their hospitality and kindness. It’s truly a blessing to meet such wonderful humans and share precious moments with them.
Our home for the next seven days was the Kikoi boutique hotel, and let me tell you, we wouldn’t have traded it for anything in the world. The spacious rooms, complete with his and hers bathrooms, a deck overlooking the bay, and a plunge pool, made us feel like royalty. It was the perfect retreat after a day of exploring.
Of course, no trip to Zanzibar is complete without a visit to Stonetown. It’s one of those places you just have to check off your list. And if you’re in the mood for some high-quality Tanzanite gems, you’re in luck! But Stonetown is also a gateway to incredible tours and attractions. One of our favorite hotels, Zanzibar Serena, situated on the waterfront, exudes colonial charm. With its beautiful swimming pool and stunning rooms, including an executive suite that is pure #joburgstyle, you can’t go wrong here.
But if you’re looking to socialize and be in the heart of the action, Paje is the place to be! Who would have thought? The beaches are breathtaking, lined with boutique hotels, kite surfing spots, jet ski rentals, cocktail bars, and bikini-clad beachgoers. Chad even compared it to the next Thailand, while I found it reminiscent of Praslin. It’s a vibrant strip where you can’t walk a meter without someone offering you a massage or trying to sell you a sarong. But fear not, if you prefer a quieter paradise, there are secluded coves waiting for you to discover.
And let’s not forget about the incredible snorkeling and dolphin swimming experiences. It’s like being alive but not being alive, if that makes any sense. In our busy lives as workaholics, parents, spouses, and friends, we often forget to indulge in the joys of life and connect with nature. Zanzibar reminded us that taking the time to do so is not a luxury; it’s an absolute necessity.
