The South African luxury designer explores memory, identity and the beauty of transformation in his Autumn/Winter 2027 collection, while introducing a new era of bridal couture
South African luxury fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee unveiled his Autumn/Winter 2027 collection, Reflections, at South African Fashion Week, presenting a deeply personal runway showcase inspired by childhood memories, self-discovery and the fluidity of water.
The collection also marked an exciting new chapter for the fashion house with the debut of a dedicated range of couture-inspired bridal gowns, extending Coetzee’s signature design aesthetic into luxury bridal fashion.
Reflections: A Personal Journey Through Fashion
Long before the runway lights and international recognition, Gert-Johan Coetzee was a young boy growing up on a farm, often finding solitude beside a quiet pond.
Watching the movement of water and his reflection on its surface became an early source of imagination. Years later, those memories have inspired Reflections, a collection that examines the relationship between who we once were and who we have become.
“This collection returns to the simplicity of where my imagination first took shape,” says Coetzee.
“Water mirrors what sits on the surface, but beneath it lies infinite depth. With ‘Reflections’, we translate that duality into garment design – balancing strength with vulnerability, and bold structural tailoring with organic, flowing movement.”
Rather than simply revisiting the past, the collection explores the contrast between public identity and private reality, questioning how ambition, experience and expectations shape the people we become.
Sculptural Silhouettes, Fluid Fabrics and Rich Textures
Water serves as both the visual and emotional foundation of the Autumn/Winter 2027 collection.
Fluid textiles, sculptural silhouettes and intricate embellishments reflect the movement of water, while structured tailoring introduces a sense of strength and definition.
The colour palette moves between aquatic cobalt blues and teals, earthy greens and warm rust tones, with graphic houndstooth adding a contemporary contrast.
Texture takes centre stage throughout the collection, with scale-like petal appliqués, dramatic floor-length fringe, statement pom-pom jackets and detailed hand embroidery.
Together, these elements create a collection that balances romanticism with bold design, highlighting the craftsmanship and creative identity of the Gert-Johan Coetzee fashion house.
Gert-Johan Coetzee Introduces a New Bridal Collection
One of the defining moments of the South African Fashion Week showcase was the introduction of Gert-Johan Coetzee’s dedicated couture-inspired bridal range.
A series of romantic ballgowns brought a new dimension to the runway, translating the designer’s signature embellishments, dramatic silhouettes and couture craftsmanship into bridal wear.
“Introducing our dedicated bridal line alongside this collection feels like a natural evolution, bringing couture artistry and emotional depth into the bridal space,” explains Coetzee.
The expansion marks a significant milestone for the South African luxury label, establishing a dedicated offering for brides seeking statement gowns with an individual design identity.
