A powerful art auction at Melrose Arch blends culture, creativity and compassion to support life-changing reconstructive surgery for children across South Africa
Johannesburg’s vibrant art and culture scene takes centre stage this May as Colours of Compassion, a meaningful charity art auction hosted by Smile Foundation in collaboration with August House and upstART Galleries, brings together some of South Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists for an evening dedicated to giving back.
Taking place on 28 May 2026 at Melrose Arch, the special event will showcase donated works from more than 34 South African artists, with all proceeds supporting children in need of reconstructive surgery, burns treatment and psychosocial care through Smile Foundation’s life-changing initiatives.
Among the acclaimed artists contributing to the auction are William Kentridge, Diane Victor, Usha Seejarim, Percy Maimela, Melissa Haiden, Nwabisa Ntlokwana, Alpheus Ngoepe, Samurai Farai, Gustav Krantz and acclaimed author and artist Zakes Mda, alongside a dynamic mix of established and emerging creative voices shaping South Africa’s contemporary cultural landscape.
The collection explores themes of identity, healing, belonging and the shared human experience, reflecting deeply personal narratives that resonate with the journeys of the children and families supported by Smile Foundation.
