MAD GIANT
Located in the 1 Fox Precinct downtown, this popular craft brewery boasts a huge retro sign on the roof beckoning thirsty visitors to come and sit in the beer garden, which stretches all the way round the building, to sample one of its four different craft beers. Inside, Mad Giant is home to eclectic touches including Meccano inspired furniture, quirky lighting and a huge metallic sculpture depicting Mad Giant. There’s a tiny shop displaying glassware and bottles of craft beer, and the brewery shares the space with the on trend Urbanologi Restaurant.
BLACK HORSE BREWERY
They call their brewery ‘extraordinary’ and indeed it is. You’ll find it on Black Horse Estate in Magaliesburg, a family-run business, with Bernard and Karen Botha, the founders, and daughter, Nuschka, responsible for brewing the fine craft beer. One of the country’s youngest female brewers, Nuschka, creates a beer that is smooth and unique tasting using natural spring water and the finest hops. Enjoy yours at the restaurant accompanied by urban beer house dishes.
COPPERLAKE
This commercial brewery based in Lanseria recently opened a new brewpub in Broadacres where you can sample its eight excellent signature brews. Great for a visit any day of the week (entertainment includes quiz nights, live brews and an Adult’s Playground with all sorts of fun games). Appreciation Sundays is another popular event. You can also book the venue to host a formal beer tasting or to brew your own beer.
JUST BREWING CO.
Based in Boksburg, this family-owned brewery produces various quality brews. Just Brewing Company is involved in numerous community projects, donating grain to assist underprivileged communities. The final product is not filtered and has no additives. Recently refurbished and extended, the brewery expects to reach an annual capacity of around 61,000 litres. Products include Just Chocolate Coffee Stout, Just Porter, Just Pale Ale as well as numerous special edition brews.
OAKES BREWHOUSE
Modderfontein boasts the first all-girl brewery in town, which manufactures great tasting home-brewed, handcrafted beer. It was founded in 2013 by pharmacist Delia Bailey and restaurant owner Thea Blom (Oakes Brewhouse sits right next door to Thea’s Portuguese restaurant, 33 High Street). The female brewer responsible for different beer at the brewery restaurant, along with some excellent ground coffee and a choice of wholesome meals.
