Durban’s landmark tourism showcase reinforces Africa’s position as a global travel force
Africa’s Tourism Economy Takes Centre Stage
Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 has wrapped on a high note in Durban, once again proving why it remains one of the continent’s most influential tourism trade events.
Hosted in KwaZulu-Natal under the theme “Unlimited Africa: Growing Africa’s Tourism Economy,” the annual showcase delivered far more than destination marketing. It created new market access, strengthened trade partnerships, encouraged policy dialogue, and unlocked economic opportunities across Africa’s tourism sector.
The event also highlighted growing alignment with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), positioning tourism as a strategic driver of regional collaboration and long-term economic growth.
A Major Economic Win for Durban
Early projections reveal a significant economic boost for Durban and the broader KwaZulu-Natal region.
Key figures include:
- 97% projected hotel occupancy
- 9,810 delegates in attendance
- 274 hosted buyers
- 637 non-hosted buyers
- 404 accredited media representatives
- R240 million in direct spending
- R835 million in total tourism expenditure
- 1,122 jobs supported
These numbers underline the growing influence of Africa’s Travel Indaba as both a tourism platform and a serious economic catalyst.
Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 demonstrated Africa’s ability to connect with global markets while delivering measurable economic value.
Corne Koch, Chief Convention Bureau Officer at South African Tourism, said the results speak for themselves. “These figures are not just numbers. They represent trade opportunities, destination visibility, enterprise inclusion and long-term growth for Africa’s tourism economy,” Koch said.
KwaZulu-Natal Strengthens Its Tourism Leadership
KwaZulu-Natal’s successful hosting of the event reaffirmed Durban’s position as a world-class business tourism destination.
Interim CEO of KZN Tourism and Film, Sibusiso Gumbi, said the province has proven Africa’s Travel Indaba belongs in KwaZulu-Natal.
The focus now shifts to building on this momentum while encouraging broader participation from African states to fully reflect the continent’s tourism potential.
Gumbi added that KwaZulu-Natal’s presence at this year’s event reflects a deliberate strategy to position tourism as a driver of investment, enterprise development and sustainable economic growth.
Durban Showcases Global Event Readiness
The City of Durban also welcomed the event’s broader destination impact.
Winile Mntungwa, Deputy Director of Durban Tourism within eThekwini Municipality, said strong delegate confidence confirms Durban’s readiness to host major international events.
The city’s infrastructure, hospitality standards, logistics capabilities and safety measures continue to attract global tourism stakeholders.
Mntungwa noted that the quality of regional and international participants is expected to translate into long-term business partnerships and meaningful tourism investment.
Investing in Africa’s Future Tourism Talent
Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 also delivered on skills development.
Around 300 Durban University of Technology tourism students gained hands-on vocational experience through active event roles, including:
- Delegate services
- Event operations
- Visitor support
- Hospitality coordination
The initiative strengthens workforce readiness and supports long-term sustainability in Africa’s tourism sector.
More Than a Trade Show
Africa’s Travel Indaba continues to evolve beyond a traditional exhibition platform.
It is now a strategic continental hub where:
- Tourism policy is shaped
- Innovation is accelerated
- Cross-border partnerships are forged
- Market barriers are challenged
- Communities are empowered
As the 2026 edition closes, it leaves behind more than impressive economic figures.
It leaves proof that tourism remains one of Africa’s most powerful tools for job creation, collaboration and inclusive growth.
