When Joburgstyle was asked what Mzansi MINI-Ness looks like to us, there was never going to be anything understated about our answer.

We wanted fashion. We wanted glamour. We wanted a little mischief. And naturally, we wanted the roof down, the sun shining and our glamour on full display.

Enter a statement Gert-Johan Coetzee creation, NARS makeup, a polished updo by Sorbet Dunkeld, Gucci earrings, Steve Madden stilettos – because yes, you can drive in heels – and a MINI Cooper S Convertible ready to turn Jozi into our concrete catwalk.

This is our MINI Magic: viciously virtuous, boldly bratty and unapologetically unserious.

There’s Nothing MINI About MINI

The name may suggest small, but MINI has never really behaved that way.

The MINI philosophy for this Heritage Day celebration is built around exactly that contradiction: compact in stature, but enormous in personality, confidence and character. The brand describes it as living LARGE – a mindset filled with swagger and individuality. 

That gave us somewhere rather fabulous to begin.

Because fashion understands the same principle. You don’t need to be the biggest thing in the room to command attention. You need personality.

Mzansi MINI-ness, The Joburgstyle Way

Soft blush tones meet extraordinary volume in a Gert-Johan Coetzee couture creation that refuses to disappear quietly into the background.

The sculptural detailing of the corset bodice gives way to layer upon layer of tulle, creating a silhouette that is feminine, theatrical and unapologetically glamorous. Against the compact proportions of the MINI Cooper S Convertible, the contrast is irresistible.

Big dress. MINI car. Massive energy.

It also captures something essential about the MINI personality: daring, fiercely stylish, unapologetically bold and just a little mischievous. 

In other words, this was never going to be a jeans-and-T-shirt kind of drive.

For us, Mzansi MINI-Ness called for Gert-Johan Coetzee.

Face On. Roof Down.

First came fashion. Then came beauty.

Nico from NARS brought the final touches, with makeup that complemented rather than competed with the drama of the fashion. The look was glamorous but considered, allowing the soft blush of the dress and its architectural detailing to remain the focus. 

A MINI driver doesn’t (often) leave the house looking ordinary – although some days do call for it – but rather putting her best self forward in a way that will conquer the world. 

The hair went up – into a gorgeous style by Tee at Sorbet Dunkeld that let the dress have its moment and the car its glory.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible’s soft top went down – so as to not hide away any of the fabulousness. 

And the stilettos went on – because the Mzansi queen will always be able to drive in four inches.

There is a particular confidence that comes with dressing for yourself rather than dressing according to the rules. That’s where the Joburgstyle story and MINI story meet.

MINI’s own language centres on challenging conformity and celebrating character. Its Mzansi interpretation adds another layer – taking that personality and giving it a distinctly South African attitude. 

We couldn’t think of a better excuse to be a little extra.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible brings its own kind of theatre to the equation. Drop the soft top and suddenly there is nothing separating the look from the city around it.
