South Africans love a good online bargain, but the lowest price does not always mean the best deal. Uhuru Marketplace founder Shaheen Price shares what shoppers should look for before clicking “buy”
Online shopping has become second nature for South Africans looking for convenience, choice and better value. With countless products only a few clicks away, online marketplaces can make it easier than ever to compare prices and hunt for a bargain.
But a tempting price tag can sometimes come with hidden risks.
Counterfeit products, unreliable sellers, unclear return policies and payment scams can quickly turn an apparent bargain into an expensive mistake. For consumers navigating South Africa’s growing online marketplace landscape, knowing what to look for before checking out is becoming increasingly important.
According to Shaheen Price, founder of Uhuru Marketplace, the problem is not online shopping itself. Rather, many consumers have never been taught how to identify the warning signs of a potentially risky purchase.
“The cheapest price on a page is designed to grab your attention, not to protect your wallet,” says Price. “Once you know the handful of signals that separate a legitimate seller from a risky one, you shop with far more confidence, and you stop paying for mistakes you didn’t know you were making.”
How to Spot a Trustworthy Online Seller
Before buying from an unfamiliar seller, it pays to do a little research.
Price says reputable online sellers will usually leave a visible digital trail. If that information is difficult to find, shoppers should consider it a potential warning sign.
1. Look for a verifiable trading history. Established sellers often have a consistent listing history and reviews that span several months. Be cautious when numerous positive reviews appear within a very short period or when contact information keeps changing.
2. Pay attention to product photography. Authentic, specific images can offer more reassurance than generic stock photography. Images that do not correspond with the product description should raise questions.
3. Check the business details. A legitimate seller should generally provide clear information about the business, its location and how customers can contact support. A chat button alone may not provide enough reassurance when something goes wrong.
4. Compare prices before buying. Everyone wants a bargain, but a product priced dramatically below comparable listings deserves closer scrutiny. If the price seems unusually low, investigate why before purchasing.
Read the Returns Policy Before You Pay
The returns policy is one of the most important parts of an online purchase – and one of the easiest to overlook.
“A returns policy tells you almost everything about how seriously a seller takes their customers,” says Price. “If it’s vague, hidden, or missing entirely, that’s your answer before you’ve even paid.”
Before checking out, Price recommends confirming three key details.
First, find out how long you have to return the product and whether the return period begins when the order is dispatched or when it arrives.
Next, establish who pays the return costs if an item is faulty, damaged or incorrect. Shoppers should understand these terms before committing to the purchase.
Finally, check what proof or packaging is required for a return. Some sellers may require original packaging, photographs or a specific returns procedure.
Knowing the process beforehand can save time and frustration later.
Online Shopping Mistakes to Avoid
Seller credentials and return policies are only part of the picture. South African shoppers should also pay attention to how transactions and deliveries are handled.
One of the biggest warning signs is a seller asking a customer to pay outside the marketplace platform. A request for a direct EFT to avoid platform fees can mean giving up protections provided by the marketplace.
Delivery times matter too. Unusually long or unclear delivery windows can sometimes indicate that goods are being sourced through third parties, potentially leaving shoppers with less certainty around delivery and quality.
Reviews should also be examined rather than simply glanced at. A five-star rating means little without context. Look for recent, detailed reviews from multiple customers and pay attention to recurring complaints.
It is also important to remember that not every online marketplace vets sellers in the same way. Before buying, consumers should understand what verification processes, buyer protections and dispute procedures the platform provides.
Why Smarter Online Shopping Matters
As e-commerce continues to become part of everyday life in South Africa, consumer awareness needs to evolve alongside it.
A bargain is only valuable when the product arrives as promised, performs as expected and can be returned or refunded when something goes wrong.
For Price, smarter marketplace shopping is ultimately about giving consumers the confidence to recognise both genuine value and unnecessary risk.
“Marketplace shopping should make life easier, not riskier,” says Price. “Our goal at Uhuru Marketplace is to make sure that as more South Africans shop online, they’re doing it with the same confidence and protection they’d expect from any trusted retailer.”
