SMag, the flagship lifestyle magazine of Sowetan, is stepping beyond the pages of print and into real life with the launch of Link’d — a bold new social experience designed to help modern singles connect meaningfully in a safe, stylish environment.

The inaugural Link’d event will take place in Johannesburg on 27 March 2026 at the Empire Rooftop Venue, bringing together singles who are ready to step away from dating apps and rediscover the power of authentic, face-to-face connections.

A Dating Experience Designed for Today’s Singles

According to SMag editor Emmanuel Tjiya, the idea behind Link’d emerged from a growing shift in how people want to meet.

“SMag has always reflected the real lives and desires of our readers,” says Tjiya. “More than ever, singles are telling us they want to date differently. They’re tired of endless swiping, safety concerns and uncertainty. They want real connection in an environment where clarity and respect are standard. Link’d has been designed to deliver exactly that.”

Over the past few years, the dating landscape has changed dramatically. Many singles are experiencing digital fatigue from dating apps, rising loneliness, and hesitation around meeting new people in traditional nightlife settings. Link’d responds to this shift by creating a purpose-built environment that combines the excitement of going out with the structure and safety people want.

As Tjiya explains, Link’d isn’t trying to replicate existing dating formats.

“It’s not a club, it’s not speed dating, and it’s not a singles free-for-all. It’s a safe-by-design, meaningful experience crafted to help singles meet confidently and authentically.”

A Simple System to Signal Your Dating Energy

One of the most distinctive elements of the Link’d experience is a simple but effective system designed to remove awkward guesswork.

Upon arrival, guests choose a coloured wristband that signals their intention for the evening:

  • Orange – Open, curious and casual

  • Green – Interested in meaningful connections

  • Purple – Just here to enjoy the vibe

This approach creates immediate clarity and allows conversations to begin naturally, without the uncertainty that often accompanies meeting new people.

Conversation Starters Built In

To help spark organic interactions, guests can submit a photo and short bio ahead of the event. These profiles appear on a looping LED display wall, giving attendees an easy way to identify and approach people they find interesting.

The concept mirrors the familiarity of digital profiles while keeping the experience firmly grounded in real-world connection.

Safety First

Safety is a central pillar of the Link’d concept. The event has been designed around clear safe-by-design principles, setting it apart from typical nightlife environments.

Guests can expect:

  • A trained and visible safety team

  • Professional security partners

  • A clear behavioural code of conduct

  • Well-lit and monitored social areas

  • Simple mechanisms to report concerns if needed

The result is an atmosphere that blends the sophistication of a rooftop cocktail experience with the comfort of a socially engaging and secure environment.

More Than an Event — A Social Movement

Link’d represents a natural evolution for SMag, turning its exploration of dating culture, identity and youth lifestyle into a living experience.

“Link’d becomes a physical extension of SMag’s mandate,” says Tjiya. “It’s about shaping conversations around dating and culture rather than simply reporting on them.”

With quarterly events planned, Link’d is expected to grow into a recurring social moment for Johannesburg singles — a space where community, expression and connection can thrive.

Powered by Arena Events

The Link’d concept was created and implemented by Arena Events, with Lyndon Barends, MD of Strategic Partnerships at Arena Holdings, emphasising the platform’s broader impact.

“We continue to innovate to create new opportunities for our audiences while offering advertisers powerful engagement opportunities. Link’d is one of those lifestyle concepts that will deliver meaningful consumer connection.”

Adding star power to the launch, South African media personality and social media influencer Harrison Mkhize has been confirmed as the face of the event.
