Introducing the hand-embroidered throw pillows from The Milaya Project, bringing a powerful blend of artisan craftsmanship and inspiring resilience to Cape Town’s design scene. These unique pieces, created by South Sudanese refugee women in the Bidibidi settlement in Uganda, are now available, offering both stunning aesthetics and a profound story.

Each Milaya Project throw pillow is a testament to the remarkable skill and cultural heritage of these women. Their traditional “milaya” embroidery is transformed into contemporary home decor; the designs incorporate traditional South Sudanese motifs, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.

According to co-founder, Nina Strolich, all the designs are conceived of by the women that are part of the project. “We take the designs they have traditionally used and adapt them for new products, or ask them to come up with a new design along a particular theme or animal,” she explains.

These motifs can include geometric patterns, stylised animals, and floral elements. The pillows feature a vibrant colour palette, adding a burst of energy and personality to any space.

“There’s no good answer for how long it takes,” she continues. “It depends on the pattern or size of the embroidery, but we could say from a couple days to a couple weeks.” What is for sure is each pillow is a one-of-a-kind piece of art, that is still versatile enough to complement a variety of interior design styles, from modern and minimalist to bohemian and eclectic.

By purchasing these throw pillows, customers directly contribute to the economic empowerment and well-being of the artisans and their communities, making a tangible difference in their lives.
