Classics on Turf Returns to Durban with an Unforgettable Musical Collaboration
Durban is preparing to welcome one of South Africa’s most anticipated cultural events as Classics on Turf returns for its second Durban edition on 14 August 2026. Hosted at the luxurious Zimbali Capital Hotel & Spa, the evening will bring together the world-renowned Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra for a once-in-a-lifetime performance.
Presented with the continued support of Telkom, Classics on Turf celebrates the meeting of South Africa’s rich isicathamiya heritage with the grandeur of orchestral music, creating a unique experience for music lovers.
A Celebration of Isicathamiya Meets Symphony
Fresh from the success of its sold-out Johannesburg concert honouring Tiyo Soga, Classics on Turf continues its mission of showcasing meaningful collaborations between South Africa’s diverse musical traditions.
This year’s Durban performance pairs the unmistakable harmonies of five-time Grammy Award winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo with specially crafted orchestral arrangements by acclaimed conductor Kutlwano Masote.
Masote, whose first professional conducting engagement was with Ladysmith Black Mambazo more than two decades ago, has created new orchestrations that honour the group’s timeless sound while introducing fresh musical dimensions.
Where Music and Golf Meet
Classics on Turf continues to blend live music with luxury lifestyle experiences and sport. Guests can enjoy a day of golf at Kloof Country Club before heading to Zimbali Capital Hotel & Spa for the evening concert.
Beyond the performances, the event also supports grassroots music development through educational workshops taking place during the week, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing South Africa’s next generation of musicians.
Technology Meets Tradition
Now in its second year of sponsorship by Telkom, the three-year partnership is helping Classics on Turf expand across Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
Following last year’s successful AI-powered audience participation experience, where concertgoers helped co-create a musical composition performed by the orchestra, this year’s edition promises even more innovative ways for audiences and musicians to connect through technology.
