Strong shoulders, sculpted waists and sensual contrasts define the latest H&M Studio collection, where the drama of 1990s fashion photography meets a distinctly modern approach to power dressing

H&M Studio is returning to the foundations of great tailoring – but this time, the rules of the power silhouette are being rewritten.

Inspired by iconic black-and-white fashion photography of the 1990s, the latest H&M Studio collection explores the tension between masculine structure and powerful femininity. Strong shoulders meet cinched waists, sharp wool tailoring is softened by delicate lace, and architectural shapes sit alongside sheer, lingerie-inspired fabrics.

The result is a wardrobe designed around presence rather than excess – confident, sensual and unmistakably H&M Studio.

A New Take on Power Dressing

At the heart of the collection is the hourglass silhouette. Shoulders are deliberately pronounced while waists are sharply defined, creating proportions that reference classic power dressing without feeling nostalgic.

Among the standout pieces is a grey melange pinstripe wool blazer, shaped with a nipped-in waist and unexpected lining that peeks from the hems. A tailored blazer-dress continues the theme with visible darting, fabric-covered buttons and a zip fastening at the back.

Prices reinforce the collection’s elevated Studio positioning. Blazers are priced from R2,999, with another statement blazer style at R3,799, while tailored trousers range from R1,199 to R1,899. The sharply cut blazer-dress is priced at R1,499.

The mood is strong without becoming severe. Instead, traditional tailoring is used to celebrate the body and give familiar menswear codes a more sensual perspective.

Tailoring Meets Sensuality

A black leather jacket with a funnel neck and strong shoulders adds another layer of attitude. Priced at R5,599, it is one of the collection’s key investment pieces.

Shirting plays with proportion and detail. A menswear-inspired cotton poplin shirt features a double collar and double-folded cuffs, with its stripe drawing inspiration from sun awnings spotted in Palermo. A white hourglass shirt introduces raw edges at the collar and cuffs alongside tuxedo-style detailing. Shirts are priced at R1,199.

Elsewhere, sheer and layered jersey brings a lighter, more intimate quality to the collection, with the mesh jersey top at R699 and other jersey tops ranging from R799 to R1,099.

Dresses Bring the Drama

The collection’s dresses provide a softer counterpoint to its commanding tailoring.

A long off-white design features waist folds, a funnel neck and baby-lock edges, while a sunset-pink double-layer dress combines spaghetti straps, a pin-tuck front, lace edging and a dramatic high slit.

Dresses are priced from R1,199 to R1,899, offering everything from fluid slip-inspired silhouettes to sharper tailored shapes and more embellished evening options.

The effect is a wardrobe that moves easily from day to night without abandoning the collection’s central idea of controlled contrasts.

Contrasts Define H&M Studio

Fabrication is central to the collection’s identity.

Wool and pinstripe tailoring appear alongside delicate three-dimensional lace embellished with sequins. Gauzy fabrics evoke lingerie dressing, while ribbed knits and faux fur introduce texture and depth.

It is a deliberate collision of opposites – architectural and fluid, masculine and feminine, restrained and sensual.

The colour palette follows the same philosophy. Deep black and charcoal provide the foundation, complemented by warm taupe and sienna tones and carefully considered moments of lighter contrast.

The Quiet Power of Knowing Your Style

For Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor and Head of Design at H&M, the collection ultimately centres on a woman with a strong sense of self.

“This H&M Studio collection is about the quiet power of a woman who knows herself. She wears tailoring with ease and ownership, but she makes it entirely her own.”

Johansson describes the collection as having an almost cinematic quality, balancing intense drama with joy. That energy takes its cues from Italian fashion photography of the 1990s and translates it into clothes designed for the contemporary wardrobe.

Rather than relying on overt statements, H&M Studio proposes a quieter interpretation of confidence – one expressed through proportion, texture and the simple authority of knowing exactly what you want to wear.

What to Shop

For those looking to buy into the H&M Studio aesthetic without committing immediately to its statement tailoring, the collection offers several more accessible entry points.

A jersey vest is R429, the mesh jersey top R699, and another jersey top R799. Knitwear ranges from R1,199 to R2,299, while skirts start at R1,199 and rise to R1,899.

At the other end of the wardrobe, tailoring commands the spotlight. Blazers range from R2,999 to R3,799, while the R5,599 leather jacket sits among the collection’s biggest statement pieces.

The H&M Studio collection will be available from 15 October 2026, exclusively online via Superbalist.
