With private villas, Mehadrin-standard dining and personalised Big Five experiences, Shiviko Kruger introduces a new approach to luxury safari travel for observant Jewish families
A luxury African safari is an experience unlike any other. Yet, for kosher-observant Jewish travellers, exploring South Africa’s extraordinary wilderness has often required careful planning, dietary compromises and adjustments to religious routines. Now, Shiviko Kruger, an exclusive private villa lodge near Kruger National Park, is changing that narrative.
Set against the spectacular landscapes of Greater Kruger, the four-villa luxury lodge has introduced a fully kosher, Mehadrin-standard safari experience. Guests can enjoy the adventure of a Big Five safari while maintaining their religious traditions, with dedicated kitchens, personalised hospitality and Shabbat-friendly facilities.
The offering brings together the freedom of private luxury travel and the reassurance of carefully supervised kosher hospitality, without compromising the authentic African safari experience.
A New Standard for Kosher Safari Travel
The concept began in early 2025 when a travel agent approached Shiviko Kruger on behalf of kosher-observant clients. Recognising an opportunity to address a gap in South Africa’s luxury safari market, Michael and Anica, who had previously managed fully kosher operations at other properties, began developing a more comprehensive offering.
Working alongside Kosher Certified South Africa (KCSA) and Kosher in the Bush (KIB), Shiviko established a hospitality programme designed to accommodate the religious and dietary requirements of observant Jewish travellers.
The lodge’s existing design provided an advantage. Each of its four private villas operates with an independent kitchen and dedicated hospitality team, allowing kosher preparation to take place separately from the property’s wider culinary operations.
The entire Shiviko team, including chefs, guides, butlers, housekeepers and management, subsequently completed a three-day certified training programme with Kosher in the Bush.
“From our very first meeting, the enthusiasm of the Shiviko Kruger team for hosting kosher guests was immediately apparent,” says Adrienne of Kosher in the Bush.
“Their willingness to learn, their positive attitude and their genuine interest in creating a welcoming environment for kosher travellers made a strong impression on us.”
Mehadrin-Standard Dining in the African Bush
At the heart of Shiviko Kruger’s kosher safari offering is a carefully managed culinary experience.
The lodge follows Mehadrin standards, with complete separation of meat, dairy and parev food preparation. Its offering includes Chalav Yisrael dairy products, mevushal wine and meat prepared according to Glatt and Chalak shechita requirements.
Ahead of every kosher booking, a KCSA-certified mashgiach arrives a day early to kasher the villa kitchen and oversee the preparation of dedicated kosher equipment.
The mashgiach remains on site throughout the stay, supervising every meal and ensuring that the required kosher standards are maintained.
Dedicated, sealed kosher utensils, known as keilim, are opened only under the mashgiach’s supervision. The lodge also works with specialist kosher suppliers in Johannesburg to source appropriate ingredients and products.
KCSA operates under the halachic authority of Rabbi Avigdor Bokow, whose experience includes studying kashrus practices in Israel, London and the United States.
For guests, this means enjoying freshly prepared meals in the privacy of their villa, with the confidence that their dietary requirements are being carefully observed.
A Shabbat-Friendly Luxury Safari Experience
One of Shiviko Kruger’s defining features is its consideration for Shabbat observance.
Rather than requiring families to adapt their religious practices around a conventional safari itinerary, the lodge offers facilities and experiences that accommodate their needs.
Villa lighting can operate on timers, while the property’s layout eliminates the need for lifts. Guests who prefer not to travel during Shabbat can explore a designated walking area, known as the green zone, beside the lodge.
The private villa format also allows families to arrange their activities and meals around their individual schedules.
This thoughtful approach makes it possible to enjoy the tranquillity of the African bush while observing Shabbat in a comfortable, private setting.
Private Villas and Personalised Big Five Safaris
Beyond its kosher offering, Shiviko Kruger delivers the exclusivity expected of a luxury private safari lodge.
Each villa includes its own private chef, butler, housekeeper and safari guide, along with a dedicated open 4×4 game-viewing vehicle.
Unlike traditional shared safari experiences, guests have the flexibility to shape their itinerary around their family’s interests, preferences and religious commitments.
Early mornings can begin with wildlife encounters in Kruger National Park, while afternoons offer opportunities to relax at the villa or explore the surrounding region.
The lodge also provides access to some of Mpumalanga’s most celebrated natural attractions, including the Panorama Route, God’s Window and the dramatic Blyde River Canyon.
For international visitors seeking a luxury kosher safari in South Africa, this combination of private hospitality, wildlife experiences and regional sightseeing offers an appealing way to discover the destination.
Family-Friendly Luxury in Greater Kruger
Shiviko Kruger has also designed its guest experience with families in mind, making it particularly attractive for multigenerational safari holidays.
The lodge’s Clubhouse features a swimming pool with two slides and a soundproof cinema complete with popcorn and slushie machines.
Younger guests can participate in activities ranging from junior filmmaking and beadwork to marimba lessons, tree planting, wildlife education and cooking experiences.
Babysitting services are available on request, allowing parents to enjoy time together while children are entertained.
With private facilities and dedicated hospitality teams, families can enjoy their safari holiday at a pace that suits everyone.
Where Luxury Safari Travel Meets Religious Tradition
As luxury travel becomes increasingly personalised, Shiviko Kruger’s kosher offering demonstrates how hospitality can accommodate specific cultural and religious needs without sacrificing comfort or experience.
The lodge continues to welcome guests of all backgrounds, while its independent villa kitchens allow kosher and non-kosher hospitality to operate separately.
For observant Jewish travellers, the result is a safari experience that combines the excitement of Africa’s wildlife, the comfort of private luxury accommodation and the confidence of Mehadrin-supervised dining.
From sunrise game drives to evenings spent around the dinner table, Shiviko Kruger offers families the freedom to experience South Africa’s natural beauty on their own terms.
