Precision, speed and world-class sailing take centre stage as the Rolex SailGP Championship returns to Switzerland, bringing cutting-edge technology and elite competition to the home of Rolex
The Rolex SailGP Championship 2026 returned to the waters of Lake Geneva on 19 and 20 September, transforming Switzerland’s iconic waterfront into a spectacular arena of speed, precision and sporting excellence. Against the backdrop of Geneva’s famous Jet d’Eau, the world’s leading sailing teams prepared to push the limits of performance in one of the championship’s most visually striking destinations.
Following the inaugural Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix in 2025, the championship returned with greater intensity, an expanded fleet and a renewed focus on the split-second decisions that define elite sailing.
With 13 international teams competing throughout the season, the 2026 championship has introduced new destinations, technological milestones and a more demanding racing format.
A New Era of Speed for the Rolex SailGP Championship
The 2026 Rolex SailGP Championship has delivered several landmark moments, including the addition of Perth, Australia, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to the international racing calendar.
The season also witnessed an extraordinary display of speed when the DS Automobiles SailGP Team France set a new championship record of 107.63 km/h in Sassnitz, Germany, in August.
At the centre of the action are the championship’s technologically advanced F50 foiling catamarans. Engineered to rise above the water on hydrofoils, these high-performance vessels combine exceptional speed with extraordinary precision.
Yet racing on Lake Geneva presents challenges that differ from those of traditional ocean venues.
Rolex Testimonee Hannah Mills, strategist for the Emirates GBR SailGP Team, explained the distinctive conditions:
“Geneva is an iconic location on the 2026 Season calendar. Racing in fresh water creates an unusual challenge for the fleet, as the foiling F50 catamarans behave differently than in salt water – they tend to be more buoyant and are less forgiving in freshwater conditions. Racing at the home of Rolex as a Testimonee was truly memorable last year and I’m really excited to be going back.”
For athletes accustomed to competing across the world’s oceans, Geneva offers a different test of adaptability, teamwork and technical mastery.
Precision and Timing at the Heart of SailGP
Few partnerships capture the relationship between time and sporting excellence quite like Rolex and SailGP.
The Swiss watchmaker has supported the championship as a Founding Partner and Official Timepiece since its inception in 2019, becoming Title Partner ahead of the 2025 season.
This association builds on Rolex’s longstanding relationship with sailing, which began in 1958 through its partnership with the New York Yacht Club.
Beyond its connection to luxury watchmaking, the Rolex SailGP Championship reflects a shared commitment to innovation, perseverance and performance under pressure.
For Rolex Testimonee Tom Slingsby, driver of the BONDS Flying Roos SailGP Team, success is determined by far more than outright speed.
“There are 41 sequences in a manoeuvre that need to happen in perfect synchronization, and if one person is a fraction out of time, it impacts everything that follows. Precise timing and accuracy are essential, particularly as there is additional risk during a manoeuvre.”
With more than 100 fleet race victories, Slingsby is the championship’s most successful athlete. His experience highlights the extraordinary coordination required to compete at sailing’s highest level.
A More Competitive Road to the Abu Dhabi Grand Final
The 2026 season introduced a significant change to the championship format, increasing the pressure on teams competing for a place in the season finale.
Split fleet racing debuted in July ahead of the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Portsmouth. Under the revised format, teams must finish among the top two in their respective groups to progress to the four-boat final.
The change places greater emphasis on consistency, tactical decision-making and flawless execution.
Ahead of the Geneva event, Slingsby’s Australian team led the championship standings, followed by Spain’s Los Gallos SailGP Team, with 17 points separating the two contenders.
As the competition moved towards the Rolex SailGP Grand Final in Abu Dhabi in November 2026, every race carried increasing significance.
Rolex and SailGP: A Partnership Beyond the Racecourse
While speed and competition remain central to the Rolex SailGP Championship, the league has also established itself as a platform for meaningful progress within international sailing.
SailGP became the first global sports league to require every team to include at least one female athlete, creating greater opportunities for women to compete at the highest level.
The championship also introduced the Impact League, an initiative that encourages teams to prioritise sustainability and positive environmental and social outcomes alongside their sporting ambitions.
These developments reflect the broader values underpinning Rolex’s association with the sport.
Sir Ben Ainslie, Chief Executive Officer of the Emirates GBR SailGP Team and a Rolex Testimonee since 2019, believes the partnership represents a commitment to excellence that extends beyond competition.
“I’m very proud to be a Rolex Testimonee and to have Rolex as Title Partner of the league. Rolex embodies integrity, excellence and unwavering perseverance, values I have consistently strived to uphold throughout my career. Throughout my journey in the sport, I have always believed that true success is built on discipline, resilience and an uncompromising commitment to improvement. This shared dedication inspires me to continue pushing boundaries and setting new standards.”
His perspective reinforces the philosophy that has defined Rolex’s involvement in elite sport for decades: true achievement is built through dedication, resilience and a constant pursuit of improvement.
Geneva: Where Swiss Watchmaking Meets World-Class Sailing
As the 11th round of the 2026 Rolex SailGP Championship, the Switzerland Sail Grand Prix brought together the worlds of high-performance sailing and Swiss watchmaking.
For Rolex, hosting the championship in its home city carries particular significance. Geneva is internationally recognised as a centre of horological excellence, making it a fitting destination for a competition where fractions of a second can determine victory.
The event also demonstrated how advanced technology, athletic skill and precise teamwork continue to shape the future of competitive sailing.
With the championship’s November finale in Abu Dhabi approaching, the Geneva event marked another important chapter in a season defined by innovation, ambition and exceptional sporting achievement.
Reach for the Crown: Celebrating the Spirit of SailGP
Alongside the championship, Rolex unveiled its latest Reach for the Crown film, celebrating the determination and human endeavour behind SailGP.
Reflecting on the league’s evolution since 2019, the film explores the challenges, defining moments and personal journeys of the athletes who have helped transform the championship into a global sporting spectacle.
Through these stories, Rolex highlights the discipline, courage and relentless pursuit of excellence that unite the world’s finest sailors.
