The Moti Cares Foundation launched its 2025 Moti Cares Winter Campaign at Katlehong Art Centre on Sunday, 15 June, distributing 800 blankets and 600 fresh loaves of bread to fill hungry stomachs and provide much-needed comfort as temperatures dropped to 5°C and below.

Moti Cares Winter Campaign’s Broader Mission

Led by Zunaid Moti, investor, philanthropist, and founder of the Moti Cares Foundation, this initiative aims to distribute 20,000 blankets across Gauteng. Various stops will also provide sealed food parcels, each carefully assembled to meet the most urgent needs identified by local organisers, delivering immediate relief, dignity, and hope to vulnerable communities in crisis.

Community Selection for the 2025 Moti Cares Winter Campaign

Katlehong was chosen following a public call for nominations in May and June, which attracted dozens of submissions from civic groups, school headteachers, faith leaders, and compassionate members of the public. Considering Moti’s high standards, of course, each nomination underwent a rigorous vetting process by the Moti Cares Foundation team. Volunteers and media from neighbouring local radio stations and newspapers assisted during the weekend’s handover, ensuring hundreds of blankets reached deserving hands in just a few hours.

Community Voices Shape the Campaign

“Community input has been overwhelming for the Moti Cares Winter Campaign. Over the past month, people have taken to social media to share details of their favourite organisations or those most in need. We’ve received numerous heart-wrenching messages describing elderly individuals retiring to bed with only a thin blanket and a nightdress, or even just a t-shirt. Stories like these strike at the heart in ways that are difficult to articulate and spur us to expand this project further.”

Legacy of Giving

The Moti Cares programme has thrived for years, with thousands of blankets and food items distributed across South Africa – a notable moment being the provision of over two million food parcels in KwaZulu-Natal following the devastating riots in 2021. The 2025 winter campaign actively continues this tradition by providing financial support and other assistance to charitable initiatives as needs arise. Additionally, it aims to address various challenges within the community.

Continued Efforts in 2025

The weekend’s efforts extended into Monday, with the Moti Cares Foundation distributing another 2,000 blankets to those facing severe hardship. In Langlaagte, volunteers distributed 600 blankets and 300 loaves of bread to families and individuals living in poverty. They also delivered another 1,200 blankets and loaves of bread to needy residents in Vrededorp. Finally, they provided 200 blankets to Johannesburg’s most vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, as well as new mothers and children at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.

Future Plans for 2025

Moti confirmed the Foundation will rely on its public-nomination model to guide upcoming outreach, with Soweto amongst the next areas targeted for support.

Call to Action for Community Support

“The need in local communities is far greater than many realise. That’s why we urge other business leaders to collaborate with non-profit organisations and contribute whatever they can – every bit counts. We’re humbled to witness the profound difference a single blanket or loaf of bread can make, and we hope more South Africans will show kindness to others,” concludes Moti.

Lasting Impact of the 2025 Moti Cares Winter Campaign

The 2025 winter campaign actively fosters community solidarity beyond immediate relief. By partnering with local non-profit organisations and engaging volunteers, the Foundation not only builds networks of compassion but also uplifts the communities it supports. Consequently, the Katlehong launch provides supplies while also encouraging residents to nominate other areas, which amplifies the campaign’s reach. Furthermore, the 20,000-blanket drive aims to inspire generosity across South Africa, thereby creating a ripple effect of kindness and support.

How to Support the 2025 Campaign

Those inspired to contribute can get involved in the Moti Cares Winter Campaign in several ways. Individuals can donate blankets or food, volunteer at upcoming handovers, or nominate communities through the Foundation’s social media platforms. Businesses can sponsor food parcels or provide logistical support to help expand the campaign’s reach. “Every contribution counts,” Moti emphasised. “Together, we can ensure no one faces the winter cold alone.”

Vision for Change in 2025

The 2025 winter campaign is a testament to the power of collective action. By addressing immediate needs and forging partnerships with non-profit organisations, the Foundation lays the groundwork for sustainable change. As the campaign moves to Soweto and beyond, it invites all South Africans to join in creating a warmer, more compassionate future for those in need.
